È abbastanza evidente, pur non conoscendo la sua traiettoria cinematografica, che dietro la macchina da presa di “La prima neve” non c’è solo un bravo regista, ma anche un sociologo, esperto di comunicazione sociale, personalmente impegnato nei temi della cooperazione internazionale. Approdato alla fiction con “Io sono li”, dopo aver girato documentari che narrano i mondi albanesi, africani, zingari, Andrea Segre si è imposto all’attenzione di critica e pubblico per la sua capacità di raccontare storie di persone e luoghi attraverso una cifra stilistica assolutamente personale, riconoscibile. La sua umanità è sempre costituita da quei soggetti marginali che, più di altri, vivono sulla propria pelle le contraddizioni di un capitalismo cieco e di uno stravolgimento del senso di comunità. Che si tratti di documentari o di fiction – in Segre, rintracciando quasi intuitivamente una tendenza fortunata del cinema contemporaneo, il confine non è molto netto – lo spettatore sperimenta immediatamente quella sorta di straniamento rispetto alla sua realtà, a cui segue una totale immersione nella realtà raccontata ed un ritorno alla propria, arricchito da una serie di spunti alla riflessione che non possono fermarsi ai titoli di coda. Si potrebbe in un certo senso affermare che le sue storie accompagnano lo spettatore oltre lo spettacolo (ammesso che ci sia ancora spazio per un’autenticità non fagocitata all’interno dell’industria del tempo libero)

Anche con “La prima neve”, secondo lungometraggio dell’autore veneto presentato a Venezia ’70 nella sezione Orizzonti, Segre ci restituisce un mondo lontano dai riflettori mediatici in cui i personaggi si incontrano dentro ad un territorio che molto spesso divide anziché unire. Il paesaggio ostico e affascinante di questo piccolo comune del Trentino, ai piedi della Val de Mocheni, narra la storia di Deni, fuggito dal Togo e poi dalla Libia, approdato in Italia e rimasto vedovo, padre di una bambina di cui non riesce a prendersi cura perché ha lo stesso volto della donna da cui si è dovuto tragicamente separare. Nello spazio dell’attesa dei tempi lunghi della burocrazia che gli permetterà di raggiungere Parigi, Deni lavora per un anziano apicoltore, nonno di Michele, ragazzo “problematico”, anche lui segnato da una distacco improvviso da un padre che ha perso la vita proprio in quelle montagne innevate. L’empatia non può che far nascere un rapporto di mutuo rispetto e condivisione: Deni e Michele si riconoscono l’uno nell’altro in quanto soggetti mutilati dell’affetto più forte, entrambi in collisione con coloro che rappresentano i reduci di quell’affetto (la figlia di Deni, la madre di Michele) e che impongono loro di fare i conti con una realtà che non può essere accettata. Quest’incontro fra due solitudini stabilisce un dialogo altrimenti impossibile, un dialogo che apre possibilità nuove per entrambi. “Fare cinema è – per Segre - concedere spazio allo sguardo, per rendere possibile l’incontro che è contaminazione” L’incontro fra differenze – non macchiato, come nel precedente “Io sono li”, dal razzismo identitario dei locals - è detonatore di un nuovo rapporto, sia con gli altri esseri umani che con la natura.
I luoghi diventano personaggi, veri e propri attori con cui lo stesso regista entra in rapporto per scoprire come possono interagire emotivamente nel racconto. L’impianto narrativo de “La prima neve” è, infatti, indissolubilmente legato ai suoi boschi, al suo popolo, e in particolare ai bambini. “Avevo bisogno di bambini ancora capaci di vivere e giocare nei boschi, di arrampicarsi sugli alberi, di lanciarsi in discesa lungo prati e pendii, e sono loro che mi hanno guidato nella valle. È seguendo loro che ho imparato a conoscerla”.
A tratti pericolosamente didascalico, “La prima neve” poggia su di una struttura che rivela, passo dopo passo, il vissuto e la complessità di persone piuttosto che personaggi, di modo che una vitale autenticità degli esseri umani al centro del racconto ci impedisce quasi di percepire il meccanismo illusorio del cinema che trasforma un attore in un personaggio. Il confine fra documento e finzione si fa labilissimo, caratteristica che, se da un lato trattiene lo spettatore dall’immersione emotiva nelle maglie del racconto, d’altro lato lo previene da facili retoriche piagnucolanti. La sensazione che ci lascia, a tratti amara, a tratti straripante di umanità, non è mai disgiunta da una certa attività del pensiero che ci costringe a fare i conti con quelle persone e con quel territorio.
Resta da capire se la scarsa attenzione ricevuta a Venezia sia totalmente amputabile a canonici aggiustamenti in seno alla giuria (con il Leone d’oro a Rosi e la Coppa Volpi a Elena Cotta non c’era spazio per un altro film italiano) o ad una riflessione che ha coinvolto pubblico e critica in un paragone dal quale “Io sono li” è uscito vincente.
