Pietro (Elio Germano), di notte addetto alla preparazione dei cornetti e di giorno aspirante attore, prende in affitto un appartamento nell'elegante e storico quartiere di Monteverde vecchio, nonostante i dissensi dell'ingombrante e buffa cugina Maria (Paola Minaccioni). Tutto sembra perfetto se non fosse che, durante la ristrutturazione dei locali, Pietro nota la presenza di "particolari" coinquilini, vestiti in abiti d'altri tempi, visibili a nessun altro che a lui. Dopo un primo momento d'impasse, inizia a familiarizzare con loro, scoprendo che si tratta della compagnia teatrale Apollonio, scomparsa in circostanze misteriose nel 1943. Mentre prosegue tra alti e bassi la sua vita, instaura un rapporto intenso con questi stravaganti personaggi, a tal punto che decide di aiutarli mettendosi sulle tracce dell'attrice Livia Morosini, un tempo vedette della compagnia, che ora vive sotto falso nome. Questa ricerca aprirà le porte ad una verità difficilmente confessabile...

Se già si era confrontato ne Le fate ignoranti con morti che, dopo la propria dipartita, risultavano ancora più vivi per il carico di menzogne che avevano lasciato a chi era rimasto e con presenze impalpabili in Cuore sacro, con questo nuovo Magnifica presenza, Ozpetek affronta la ghost-story attingendone a piene mani, in forma di smagliante e riuscita commedia. Tra le suggestioni inevitabili di un capolavoro come Fantasmi a Roma di Pietrangeli, quelle de L'Angelo sterminatore di Buñuel ed i riferimenti voluti dalla co-sceneggiatrice Pontremoli ai pirandelliani Sei personaggi in cerca d'autore (basti pensare ad uno dei set-up/payoff “Finzione! Finzione!... Ma quale finzione, realtà!”), il film, permeato di forte ironia, è costantemente attraversato da una sottile linea di tensione, permettendo così a protagonista e spettatori di familiarizzare con tutti i personaggi, rivivendo noi con loro il dramma dell'ingabbiamento temporale.
Mescolando numerose e varie tematiche (l'omosessualità, la guerra, l'arte, la bellezza, il teatro, Roma, la poesia, l'amore..) senza però perdere la bussola in questo gioco tra arti rappresentative – tranne un po' nel finale, in cui non si riesce ad evitare quell'effetto di meraviglia nei “sopravvissuti” che fa tanto un Ritorno al futuro un po' troppo fuori contesto –, il regista turco si dimostra ancora una volta eccellente ed amorevole direttore dei suoi interpreti e “re-talent-scout”. In mezzo a molte conferme del nostro – e non solo - cinema ed a prestiti da altri settori dello spettacolo (ad esempio il cantante lirico Ambrogio Maestri ed il transtelevisivo Mauro Coruzzi in arte Platinette), recupera una divina Anna Proclemer alla quale, dall'alto dei suoi magnifici quasi novant'anni, affida il volto della misteriosa Livia Morosini, i cui occhi cattivi ed il ricordo amaro della propria irrinunciabile bellezza, rievocano la Clara Calamai di Profondo Rosso.
Intitolandolo inizialmente al plurale, gli autori hanno infine voluto prediligere il ruolo del bravissimo ed insostituibile Elio Germano quale strana e “magnifica presenza”, aspirante intruso in un mondo di attori che una drammatica fase storica ha ferito, fino ad ucciderli, consegnandoli per sempre all'immortalità.
